Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.

Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. Tube. Duration : 60.15 Mins.

On this installment of “Books of Our Time” join host Dean Lawrence R. Velvel as he unravels the keys to Abraham Lincoln's leadership genius. Velvel is interviewing acclaimed historian Doris Kearns Goodwin was recently a guest on MSLAW programming. Goodwin is the author “Team of Rivals.” In this new book about Abraham Lincoln and his cabinet, she explores Lincoln's political genius as she tracks the one-term congressman and prairie lawyer as he rises from obscurity to prevail over gifted rivals of national reputation to become president. These rivals were all then appointed by Lincoln to important positions. They include Salmon P. Chase, the Ohio governor who was Lincoln's Secretary of the Treasury; Missouri statesman Edward Bates, named Attorney General; William Seward, a Senator from New York who became Secretary of State; and Edwin Stanton, who later in the administration was named Secretary of War. Here Goodwin comments on Lincoln, Seward, and the 1860 Republican National Convention: “Seward is the most interesting character, in some ways, of Lincoln's cabinet, because everyone thought he should have been president, including himself. Ten thousand people waiting outside his home (on the evening the nomination was secured for Lincoln), the champagne already uncorked, and it seemed like an irrecoverable disappointment.” massachusetts school of law at andover
