Makoto Shinkai (新海誠Shinkai Makoto), born as Makoto Niitsu (新津誠Niitsu Makoto, born February 9, 1973) is a Japanese director of anime and former graphic designer. A native of the Nagano Prefecture. Shinkai studied Japanese literature at Chuo University where he was a member of juvenile literature club where he drew picture books. He traces his passion for creation to the manga, anime, and novels he was exposed to while in middle school. His favorite anime is Castle in the Sky by Hayao Miyazaki. Shinkai has been called "The New Miyazaki" in several reviews including Anime Advocates and ActiveAnime, comparisons which he calls an "overestimation". In 2001, Shinkai was a 28-year-old graphic designer who quit his job at game developer Falco to work on an ambitious project: Voices of a Distant Star. Shinkai wrote, animated, and even voiced the 25-minute original anime, which received rave reviews on both sides of the Pacific Ocean, eventually released officially in North America by ADV. Two more works followed: 2004's The Place Promised in Our Early Days and 2007's 5 Centimeters Per Second. The film is made of Adobe Photoshop cs 2 and After Effects, Maya/lightwave 3d and Soundtrack Pro for the MAC . Approximately , 6000 photos for 3 episodes , 300 a4 pages for the storyboard , a total of 1000 backgrounds were created for the final movie .
